How to choose natural stone

Which natural stone format should I choose?

Start with the format required for your project. Stone and marble mosaics offer smaller pieces arranged in repeat patterns, while crazy paving uses irregular stone pieces. Organic stone walling creates a textured wall surface; matching walling corners are sold separately. Check the individual product’s specifications and installation requirements before selecting a format for a floor, wall or outdoor area.

How do colour and finish affect the result?

Compare colour, stone type and finish together. Natural stone varies between pieces, so the finished surface will have variation rather than a uniform printed pattern. A product photograph is a reference for appearance, not a guarantee that every piece will look identical. For mosaics, also compare the pattern and piece size. Check the product page for its stated finish and arrange pieces before installation to plan the overall layout.

Can every natural stone product be used on floors or outdoors?

No. Belonging to this collection does not mean a product is suitable for every location. Confirm the specific product’s floor or wall application, slip-test information where relevant, and any limitations for outdoor exposure or wet areas. A surface described as honed, tumbled or textured does not by itself prove a particular slip rating. Walling and matching corners are wall formats; do not treat their membership here as floor-use approval.

How are mosaics, crazy paving and walling ordered?

Read the sales unit on the product page before comparing prices or entering a quantity. In the current Stone Depot range, crazy paving and walling are ordered in whole packs representing 1 m², and corners are ordered in whole linear metres. Mosaic sheet dimensions and coverage vary by product, so do not apply the Stone Depot pack conversion to mosaics. Calculate the required quantity using the selected product’s stated coverage and allow for the planned layout and cuts.

What should I check before installation and cleaning?

Check the selected product’s installation and stone-care information before choosing adhesives, grout, cleaners or sealing products. Requirements depend on the stone, finish, substrate and installation location. Do not assume that one treatment is suitable for the whole collection or that sealing makes a product waterproof or slip-resistant. Ask your installer to confirm the preparation and maintenance instructions for the exact product, particularly where mosaics, irregular paving or walling are involved.

Natural stone FAQs

Is porcelain tile natural stone?

No. Porcelain is a manufactured ceramic material, even when its surface reproduces a marble or travertine pattern. Natural stone is cut from geological stone. Check the material on the product page rather than relying on a collection name or stone-look design. This collection includes natural stone formats; compare manufactured alternatives in our stone-look tiles range.

Is natural stone porous?

Natural stone can absorb liquids, but its absorption and care requirements vary by stone and finish. A suitable impregnating sealer can improve stain resistance where recommended; it does not make stone stain-proof. Follow the instructions for the specific stone and sealer, promptly blot spills and avoid acidic cleaners such as vinegar on marble, limestone and travertine.

How much extra should I allow for natural stone tiles?

Allow additional material for cuts, breakage and the laying pattern. Stone Depot’s guidance uses around 10% for straightforward rectangular layouts and notes that irregular or more complex patterns can need more. Treat this as a starting estimate, not a guaranteed allowance. Confirm quantities with your installer using the selected product’s sales unit and layout.
