Tilemall recommends that our customers pass on the following installation instructions to both the installer and end-user.
Tiles are only one part of a larger building system, and tile failure is often due to a combination of factors such as improper design, substrate type, surface preparation, installation conditions, adhesive choice, product compatibility, or installer skill. Tilemall does not participate in the design, selling, or installation processes, and once the tiles leave our warehouse, we have no control over how or where they are used. The project manager or installer is responsible for ensuring that all components used in a project are compatible and that the tiles are installed per Australian Building Code and Standards.
Installation Guidelines:
1. Before Installation:- Verify that the tiles are the correct colour and design as ordered.
- Check the batch details on each carton to ensure tiles are from the same batch.
- Lay tiles from multiple boxes to ensure an even blend.
- Ensure you have enough tiles to complete the job, as colour and shade variations may occur between batches.
2. During Installation:
- Tile less visible areas (under appliances, etc.) last in case extra tiles are needed.
- Regularly check for tile defects and maintain a consistent blend.
- If any concerns arise, stop installation and contact your tile supplier immediately.
3. Post-Installation:
- Keep the original tile boxes for future orders.
- Ensure the installer cleans all grout and residue.
- Our warranty covers product defects before installation. We do not cover losses due to poor installation or product misuse.
Glazed Porcelain, Polished Porcelain, and Natural Porcelain:
- Follow the ceramic tile installation instructions above.
- Sealing is optional but recommended in high-spill areas.
High Gloss Glazed Tiles:
- These tiles scratch easily, so they are best suited for “soft shoe” areas like bathrooms. Protect them during construction to avoid scratches.
Extruded Tiles & Terracotta:
- These tiles may have more color, size, and shade variation. Detailed instructions can be found under the specific tile type.
Porcelain Pavers:
- Porcelain pavers can be installed on sand/gravel, grass, pedestals, or concrete.
Glass Tiles:
- Use white adhesive designed for glass and ensure 100% coverage for a flawless finish.
- Handle glass tiles carefully and use appropriate tools to prevent cracking or splintering.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners as they may scratch the surface.
Lighting:
- Ensure the lighting during tile installation matches the final lighting conditions to avoid highlighting imperfections.
Storage:
- Store tiles on their edge to avoid breakage.
Mosaic Tiles:
- Mosaic tiles may show more shade variation. Lay out several square meters first to check for consistency.
Fiberglass Pools and Spas:
- We do not recommend tiling fiberglass pools due to the risk of failure from movement and temperature extremes.
Additional Recommendations:
- All work should be carried out by licensed contractors with experience in tile installation.
- Follow Australian Building Code and AS3958 standards for the installation of ceramic tiles.
Cleaning and Maintenance:
- Avoid using abrasive cleaners that could damage the tile surface. Mild detergents are recommended for daily cleaning. For tougher stains, use specialty tile cleaners.
By following these guidelines, you can ensure proper installation and long-term durability of your tiles.
