How to choose floor tiles

Which floor tiles suit each room?

Start with the room, because each one asks something different of the floor. Bathroom floor tiles and kitchen floor tiles need grip when wet, living room floor tiles take daily traffic but stay mostly dry, and outdoor floor tiles face rain and sun. Every tile in this range is porcelain (1,236 products), so the choice is mainly about slip rating, finish, size and look.

What slip rating does a floor tile need?

Choose P3 or higher for wet rooms such as bathrooms, laundries and kitchens, and P4 or P5 outside. In this range 556 tiles are rated P3 to P5 (260 at P3, 241 at P4, 55 at P5); 568 have no rating listed, so check the product page before laying them in a wet area. The P-Rating filter narrows the list, and matt anti-slip tiles are grouped for wet floors.

Which finish is best for a floor?

Matt is the everyday choice (560 products): it hides footprints and gives more grip than a shiny surface. Surface Tec (159) adds an anti-slip surface that is made to be easier to clean. Gloss (176), lappato (43) and polished (27) tiles reflect more light and suit dry rooms, because a shiny floor is slippery when wet.

What size floor tile should I choose?

600 x 600 mm (236 products) and 1200 x 600 mm (227) are the most common sizes, followed by 600 x 300 mm (130) and 1200 x 1200 mm (44). Larger tiles mean fewer grout lines and a calmer floor in open areas; smaller tiles and mosaic floor tiles follow the falls to a shower drain more easily. Browse large tiles for the biggest formats.

Which look should I choose for a floor?

Stone look tiles are the largest group (333 products) and hide everyday dust well. Marble look tiles (220) bring veining without the sealing real marble needs, terrazzo look tiles (114) suit modern homes, and timber look tiles give the warmth of boards in rooms where timber would not cope with water.

Floor tile FAQs

Are tiles better than timber flooring?

Tiles are the better choice for wet rooms, kitchens and indoor-outdoor living, because porcelain is not damaged by water and is hard to scratch. Timber feels warmer and softer underfoot. Many homes use tiles in wet areas and living spaces and keep timber or carpet for bedrooms, or choose timber look porcelain to get the look of boards everywhere.

Are timber look tiles a good idea?

Yes, if you want the look of boards in a bathroom, kitchen or alfresco area where real timber would struggle. Timber look porcelain does not need sanding, oiling or sealing. Long plank formats show any dips in the slab, so ask your tiler about levelling first, and read our timber look tiles guide for layout ideas.

How much do floor tiles cost?

The price depends on the size, finish and look, so filter the range by price before you shortlist. Measure the floor area in square metres, add a margin for cuts and future repairs, and check whether each tile is priced per square metre, per box or per piece. Add adhesive, grout, levelling and labour to the budget, and order samples to compare finishes at home.

Which colour floor tile is best?

Light greys and whites are the most common choice (265 grey and 294 white tiles here) because they brighten a room and suit most styles. Mid greys and stone tones hide dust and footprints best, while very dark or very white floors show marks sooner. A grout close to the tile colour hides the joint lines; browse grey floor tiles to compare.
