A calm home doesn't have to feel plain. In this West Ryde duplex, we worked with Tennyson Building to create a natural flow between spaces, using two stone-look tiles as the foundation.
Ankara Vein Cut Matt White brings a light, understated texture to the living areas, while Xia Honed Cream introduces a softer, warmer feel in the bathroom. Gloss white subway tiles, brushed gold tapware and an ivory kit kat mosaic in the laundry add character in smaller, considered ways.
The result is a home that feels connected from room to room, with each space offering something a little different.

Designing a home that feels connected
The brief for this West Ryde duplex was to create a home that feels light, relaxed and cohesive, without making every room look the same.
Natural light was an important part of the design. The finishes needed to make the most of it while keeping the overall look soft and comfortable. Rather than introducing too many colours or competing patterns, we built the palette around warm whites, creamy neutrals and subtle stone-inspired textures.
This is a useful approach when choosing finishes for an entire home. Start with a consistent colour palette, then introduce variation through texture, finish and scale. The spaces feel related, but each still has room for its own personality.
How do you combine two stone-look tiles without making a home feel busy?
Keep the colours in harmony, then let the textures do the work.
That was the thinking behind using Ankara Vein Cut Matt White in the living areas and Xia Honed Cream in the bathroom. Both draw inspiration from natural stone, but they have different visual qualities that suit their respective spaces.
In the living areas, Ankara Vein Cut Matt White takes its cues from vein-cut travertine. Cutting stone along its natural layers reveals long, flowing bands, creating a more linear pattern than the familiar movement of swirling stone. This gives the floor a subtle sense of direction without making it a dominant feature. It's one of several travertine look tiles that bring this softer, natural look to a modern home.
The large-format tiles also mean fewer grout lines across the floor, helping the open-plan areas feel visually continuous. The matt white finish keeps the look understated, allowing natural light, furniture and other interior details to take centre stage.
In the bathroom, Xia Honed Cream brings a slightly more organic character. Its softer cream tones and stone-inspired pattern add warmth without introducing a strong contrast. The honed finish complements the natural aesthetic, creating a quieter backdrop for the everyday rituals that happen in this space. If you like this feel, our stone look tiles offer more tones and finishes to compare.
The design lesson: you don't need to find one tile that works everywhere. Two tiles with complementary undertones and different textures can create more depth while keeping the overall palette cohesive.

How do you add personality to a calm bathroom?
Start with a quiet foundation, then choose one or two details worth noticing.
With Xia Honed Cream establishing the main palette, the bathroom has room for a little contrast. Waverly Gloss White Subway introduces a different shape and surface, creating a subtle change in texture without pulling the design away from its neutral foundation.
Used behind the vanity, the glossy finish catches the light differently from the surrounding honed tile. It's a small detail, but one that adds depth and keeps the space from feeling too uniform.
Brushed gold tapware brings another layer of warmth. Against the cream and white surfaces, the metal finish feels like a considered finishing touch rather than a statement that demands attention.
This is one of the simplest ways to bring personality into a neutral bathroom: combine surfaces that respond to light differently, then use a warm accent to tie them together. The result feels layered and personal, without needing lots of decorative elements.

Can a laundry splashback be practical and playful?
Absolutely. A laundry might be a hardworking space, but that doesn't mean it needs to be an afterthought.
In this duplex, the Reed Mosaic Kit Kat Gloss Ivory splashback brings a more tactile detail into the room. Its slender, raised profile adds dimension to the wall, while the ivory colour keeps it connected to the wider palette.
The glossy surface reflects light, giving the laundry a brighter, more considered feel. And because the mosaic introduces texture in a relatively small area, it adds interest without competing with the larger stone-look surfaces elsewhere in the home.
It's a reminder that even a compact utility space can contribute to the overall design story. You don't need to make every surface a feature. Sometimes one carefully chosen detail, like a mosaic tile splashback, is enough to make an everyday room feel special.
From a practical perspective, consider how the splashback will be cleaned and maintained, particularly around sinks and other areas exposed to water. The tile's profile, grout joints and installation will all influence day-to-day upkeep.

What can you take from this project for your own renovation?
You don't need a long list of different tiles to create a home with character. Often, the most successful interiors come from a few well-chosen materials that work together.
Here are three ideas worth taking into your own project.
1. Build your palette before choosing your feature tiles.
Start with the overall feeling you want your home to have. Warm whites, creams and natural stone-inspired patterns make a versatile foundation. Once those tones are established, it's easier to introduce a contrasting shape, glossy finish or metallic accent without the design feeling disconnected.
2. Use texture to create variety.
A matt floor, a honed stone-look surface and a glossy mosaic can all sit comfortably within a similar colour family. The difference in texture gives each space its own identity while maintaining a sense of flow throughout the home.
3. Choose tiles for the space, not just the look.
Large-format tiles can help reduce grout lines across open areas, while smaller feature tiles can add detail to a niche, splashback or vanity wall. For bathrooms and laundries, it's also important to check the tile's slip-resistance rating and suitability for the intended application. The right choice balances the look you love with the practical needs of the space.
And one final tip: take samples home before making your decision. Look at them in the morning, in the afternoon and under your evening lights. Natural and artificial lighting can change how a tile's colour and texture appear, and seeing the samples alongside your cabinetry, paint colours and tapware will help you make a more confident choice.
The tiles that tie this home together
This West Ryde duplex shows how a few well-chosen tiles can carry a calm, connected look through a whole home. Ankara Vein Cut Matt White keeps the living areas light and continuous. Xia Honed Cream adds warmth to the bathroom, with Waverly Gloss White Subway and brushed gold tapware as quiet details. A Reed Kit Kat Gloss Ivory splashback gives the laundry its own character.
A calm interior isn't about making every room identical. It's about finding the right balance between continuity and contrast, so the whole home feels considered while each space has its own character.
If you're planning a renovation and aren't sure where to start, we're here to help you explore the options, compare finishes and find combinations that feel right for your home. Order samples to see them in your own light, or visit our showroom in Silverwater, Sydney to see the tiles up close.
Quick answers
Can you use two different stone-look tiles in one home?
Yes. Choose tiles with complementary undertones and give each its own space, such as a matt travertine look in the living areas and a honed stone look in the bathroom. That way the change feels intentional.
Which tile finish works best in a home with lots of natural light?
Matt and honed finishes reflect less light than gloss, so they keep sunny rooms soft and comfortable. A small area of gloss, such as a subway feature or mosaic splashback, can then add a little sparkle.
How do you add personality to a neutral bathroom?
Keep the main tile calm, then add one contrasting surface, like gloss subway behind the vanity, and one warm accent such as brushed gold tapware.
Is a kit kat mosaic a good choice for a laundry splashback?
It can be. A kit kat mosaic adds texture and interest to a small wall area. Think about cleaning and grout upkeep around the sink when you plan the layout.
