Choosing mosaic tiles by material, shape and application

Mosaic tiles can bring colour, texture and a tighter pattern to bathroom walls, kitchen splashbacks, shower niches and feature areas. Selected products may also suit floors, but the intended application must be confirmed for the exact tile. Begin with material: porcelain mosaics, glass and natural stone each have different visual variation and care considerations.

Shape and scale change both the appearance and the installation. The current range includes square, kit kat, herringbone, fan and hexagon formats alongside other decorative patterns. Check the individual chip size, mounted sheet dimensions, joint spacing and pattern repeat, then review a full sheet with the proposed grout colour. Small chips can follow curves and falls, while larger pieces need careful setting out around edges, fixtures and niches.

Suitability must be checked product by product. A mosaic described for walls should not be assumed suitable for floors, wet areas or immersion. Review the stated application and slip information where relevant, then confirm substrate, adhesive, grout, sealing and movement joints with the installer.
