Designing a herringbone floor

The current herringbone collection includes both engineered timber and hybrid flooring from several brands. That gives a useful choice of natural timber character and more consistent manufactured finishes, but it also means there is no single herringbone installation specification. Confirm the product construction before comparing colours.

Herringbone is formed from rectangular pieces laid in an interlocking directional pattern. Board length and width control the scale: compact pieces create a busier repeat, while larger pieces make the geometry more open. Decide where the central axis should sit, how the pattern meets walls and doorways, and whether a straight border is required before quantities are calculated.

Engineered timber can show board-to-board variation, so assess more than one sample. Hybrid designs may be more consistent but still differ in surface texture, edge treatment and locking system. For aligned V-shaped points rather than the broken zigzag, compare chevron flooring.

Pattern layouts involve more cuts than straight planks and need an installer-approved allowance. Product instructions should guide substrate preparation, handed pieces where applicable, installation sequence, expansion and maintenance.
